This fun run of either a 5k or 10k or anything in between will begin at the east end of Cascade Beach Road at 9am. \nIn the spirit of Thanksgiving participants who bring a monetary donation for the Cook County Food Shelf will receive a token for a free pint of beer at Voyageur Brewing Company. \nThe road will not be closed and may be icy. Participants are responsible for their own safety. The event will not be timed and there will not be mile markers\, awards or aid stations. \n

DESCRIPTION:Voyageur Brewing Company loves to showcase the wonder and beauty in Cook County. State Parks\, National Forests and other historical sites get most of the fame in Minnesota but just as important and sometimes even more special are SNA’s\, or Scientific and Natural Areas. Some places don’t hold the distinguishing name of a SNA but are equally interesting and we invite you to explore a place nearby that is deserving of recognition. \nMeet at the Grand Marais Public Parking lot in front of the Cook County Coop at 1:00pm to carpool to the location. Or meet at the location itself near mile marker 121 at 1:30pm. Be sure to dress warm because all time will be spent outside and there will surely be a cool breeze off of Lake Superior. All participants will receive a token for a free 9-ounce pour at Voyageur Brewing Company where conversation and learning can continue. \nIcelandite Coastal Fen\n  \nMaybe you’ve heard of them\, maybe you haven’t. Find out more about SNA’s on the MN DNR website.  \nScientific and Natural Areas are exceptional places where native plants and animals flourish; where rare species are protected; and where we can know\, and study\, Minnesota’s fascinating natural features. \nThey protect natural features of exceptional scientific or educational value including: \nnative plant communities\,\npopulations of rare species\,\nand geological features. \nThey may also contain: \nsuccessional processes\,\nrelict flora or fauna\,\nnatural formations\,\nfossil evidence\,\nhabitat for concentrations of animals\,\nor vantage points for observing migration routes or other animal concentrations. \nExamples include: \nWorld-class peatlands in northern Minnesota\,\nnative prairie remnants in western and souther Minnesota\,\nunique shorelines along Lake Superior\, and\nthe blufflands of the southeastern Minnesota. \nProtection of multiple sites in each landscape region is a vital means of capturing the genetic diversity and preventing the loss of important species\, communities\, and features. This strategy observes the wisdom of not putting all our eggs in one basket. \nCharacteristics that distinguish Natural Areas include: \nUndisturbed plant communities\, such as prairie or peatlands\nRare or endangered species habitat\, such as the sunny rock outcrops needed for the “uncommon” five-lined skink\nSeasonal habitat for bird or animal concentrations\, such as herons\, egrets and the endangered piping plover\nNatural geologic formations and features\, such as eskers and rock outcrops\nPlant communities undergoing succession as a result of natural processes\, such as old-growth forests

DESCRIPTION:Learn more about our favorite trail!\nAs part of our June “Get Outdoors Month”\, we are dedicating June 27th to the Superior Hiking Trail\, our favorite 300 mile trail that passes right through our backyard. This event will feature a group educational hike\, a specialty beer for the Superior Hiking Trail Association\, and a presentation about the changes coming to the Cook County sections of the trail. The proceeds from our specialty beer will go towards trail maintenance as well as $1 from every other pint sold this day. Grab a beer and check out the schedule below! \n2:00pm – “A Tale of Two Bridges and the Tales They Tell about Caring for the Superior Hiking Trail” informational guided hike. Meet at the Kadunce River wayside on Highway 61 east of Grand Marais. \n5:00-9:00pm – SHT representatives at the brewery to answer questions and chat. They will have maps\, trail guides\, and lists of Voyageur Brewing beer and hike pairings. \n6:00pm – Presentation and conversation in the back brewery about the trail maintenance coming to Cook County.
