DESCRIPTION:Special Thursday music with local craft beer and a local artist.\nMaria Nickolay’s music seeks to illuminate stories of the soul through song. Before becoming a solo artist in her own right\, Nickolay performed around Northern Minnesota in various bands with family and friends. After a spending two years in Northern Ireland she has returned to her North Shore roots to continue writing and performing her music. A voice laced with both smoke and silk\, at turns clear and full of gravel\, Nickolay infuses lyric and melody with a style that unites traditional and past tunes with current music. Her sound comes out of a depth of musical genres; including Traditional Irish\, Appalachian\, Blues\, Folk\, Indie\, Country\, and even and little Rock n’ Roll. Every song she delivers she does so with honest emotion and a contagious passion for the sheer joy of making music. Nickolay is currently playing live in local venues in the Cook County area. Turn your artwork in to the Soil & Water office by Friday\, April 20 or from 11am to 1pm on Saturday\, April 21 at the Community Beach Clean-Up at Harbor Park\, downtown Grand Marais. \n3. Winners of each age group will have their artwork featured on the Cook SWCD website. DESCRIPTION:Just in time for Earth Day\, grab a cold craft beer and learn about the rocks along the North Shore!\nRetired Professor of Geology at the University of Minnesota Duluth will be giving a talk entitled “Our Geological Foundations: Hot Rocks\, Cool Rocks”. Read more about him below and join us on April 21st at Voyageur Brewing! \n“John is a retired Professor of Geology at the University of Minnesota Duluth\, having taught there for 41 years (retired in 1999). His principal area of research has been the ancient volcanic rocks of the Lake Superior area (Midcontinent Rift System)\, especially the North Shore\, as well as the Ely area. Since 1965 he has walked – or paddled – nearly the entire shoreline from Jay Cooke State Park southwest of Duluth to Grand Portage on the Canadian border\, as well as bushwhacking through much of the interior\, while mapping the bedrock geology. He has led many field trips from local\, national\, and international groups to study these world-famous rocks. \nJohn is also an all-around naturalist\, and has published books\, articles\, and pamphlets on these topics for the general public. He has promoted the protection of several sites in the area as State Scientific and Natural Areas\, and has helped lay out the route for the Superior Hiking Trail\, especially from Two Harbors to Jay Cooke. \nJohn lives in Duluth with his wife Jan\, an ornithologists\, environmentalist\, and author.”

DESCRIPTION:Enjoy live music\, cold craft beer\, and tasty appetizers at Voyageur Brewing Company in Grand Marais\, Minnesota.\nGene and Amy have been writing and performing together since 2012 and moved to the North Shore of Lake Superior in August of 2014 Their emphasis is on acoustic style duet performances of their original songs as well as unique renditions of some of their favorite artists from Dylan to dirt old country. \nGene LaFond has been writing and performing for over 50 years. He has opened for Bob Dylan and has performed original songs twice\, with his pal the late Larry Kegan\, at Neil Young’s Bridge School Benefit Concert (a songwriter showcase put on in San Francisco by Neil for nearly 30\,000 fans to raise money for the Bridge School for Disabled Children). \nGene has played numerous venues throughout the years in the Twin Cities as well as a dozen or more times with renowned violinist Scarlet Rivera. Gene has also performed and traveled with legendary folk musician Ramblin Jack Elliott. \nFormer cowgirl and junk artist Amy Grillo began singing around the campfires and in the bars and music venues of Minnesota’s Iron Range. Her ear for harmony and a good story are what give her songs a unique\, earthy and relatable feel. Her sweet harmonies and lyrical talent are a perfect compliment to Gene’s vocal and guitar picking style.

During the tour guests 21 and over will be offered samples of our four flagship beers. \nBrewery tours fill up quickly and there’s a 20 person maximum per group.
