DESCRIPTION:Live Music\, craft beer\, tasty appetizers and a view of Lake Superior in Grand Marais\, Minnesota.\nMinnesota based Folk-Rock singer/songwriter and active musicologist\, Matthew Griswold\, is currently playing hundreds of his modern day minstrel-like shows each year. Though a “solo” performer in trade title\, he carries a chorus of layered guitars and an array of dynamic vocal themes. Those elements are all then supported by a boot strapped foot stomping on a cigar box foot drum keeping a sacred element to the music.\nGriswold’s performances are rugged\, haunting\, howling\, bone-shaking affairs where all of the grit and soul of a man who has seen the war torn battlefields of Iraq\, yet still sought hope after the worst of it’s tragedies\, are brought forth through one voice and one guitar. He confidently leaves his crowds cradled in subtleties\, but rocked with an undeniable presence. Those who witness him live\, will experience a musician who inhabits\, and is inhabited by\, his music as if it were a spiritual transformation allowing him to become a fearless poet calling out through a cadence and dancing in the dragon’s den. \nHe has crafted an arrangement style of his own (“Hypno-tonic Grooves”)\,\nwhich he employs to reinvent classics\, adapt traditional standards\, and plug original work that stand in tribute to their deep lineage. With a well-honed talent\, ego-less work ethic\, and applied insights of ethnomusicology tilting the odds in his favor\, Griswold has become one of the country’s most active independent working musicians. He has over ten years of strategic millage marked by thousands of live performances and hundreds of intriguing press features. SUMMARY:North Shore Water Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Voyageur Brewing Company is hosting a film festival as part of the North Shore Water Festival the weekend of July 21st – 23rd. Tickets are $10 and include a pint of beer. \nHere is the schedule for the festival: \n6:00pm – When the Waves Call (24 minutes) \nThrough the portraits of three Wisconsin surfers\, this short documentary explores the shared passion for Great Lake surfing that drives a group of surfers to seek that next freshwater wave. \n6:30pm – Superior Dream (49 minutes) \nUMD alumni Lucas Will and Greg Petry accomplished a shared goal: to see the entire Lake Superior shoreline from a kayak. They chose to follow “Leave No Trace” principles to give back to “the body of water that helped to shape our lives.” They completed their kayaking journey around Lake Superior in 97 days with over 80 hours of camera footage and numerous blog posts. They paddled clockwise\, starting and ending in Duluth\, covering over 1\,200 miles. \n7:30pm – Cold Love (1 hour) \nCold Love reveals the dramatic beauty and life-giving forces of our earth’s frozen places. When viewed up close\, both the breathtaking majesty and the heartbreaking fragility of this world is clear for all to see. And in the seeing\, we can’t help but be inspired to love and protect our earth’s frozen places\, which regulate the global climate and provide a stable environment. For the past three decades\, Arctic explorer Lonnie Dupre has traveled – by dogsled\, skis\, and kayak – more than 15\,000 miles throughout the High Arctic and polar regions. His life-long love of the Arctic and the knowledge he has gained by traveling and living with Inuit people has led him to pursue one aim: advocating for these fragile Arctic environments that impact the well-being of the whole planet. \nLonnie will be present to introduce the film and afterwards for a Q&A. \nTickets available soon.
