Earth Day Rock Talk

April 21, 2018 @ 5:00 pm

Just in time for Earth Day, grab a cold craft beer and learn about the rocks along the North Shore!

Retired Professor of Geology at the University of Minnesota Duluth will be giving a talk entitled “Our Geological Foundations: Hot Rocks, Cool Rocks”. Read more about him below and join us on April 21st at Voyageur Brewing!

“John is a retired Professor of Geology at the University of Minnesota Duluth, having taught there for 41 years (retired in 1999). His principal area of research has been the ancient volcanic rocks of the Lake Superior area (Midcontinent Rift System), especially the North Shore, as well as the Ely area. Since 1965 he has walked – or paddled – nearly the entire shoreline from Jay Cooke State Park southwest of Duluth to Grand Portage on the Canadian border, as well as bushwhacking through much of the interior, while mapping the bedrock geology. He has led many field trips from local, national, and international groups to study these world-famous rocks.

John is also an all-around naturalist, and has published books, articles, and pamphlets on these topics for the general public. He has promoted the protection of several sites in the area as State Scientific and Natural Areas, and has helped lay out the route for the Superior Hiking Trail, especially from Two Harbors to Jay Cooke.

John lives in Duluth with his wife Jan, an ornithologists, environmentalist, and author.”
