April at Voyageur Brewing Company

Svart Is Black Lager

April showers bring May flowers but let’s not ignore what else April offers us in our neck of the woods. It’s a month where we enjoy moose licking salt off of the road, fish spawning in rivers, ice melting off area lakes, waterfalls flowing and grouse drumming in the woods. We encourage you to take time to enjoy the treasures our area provides in April. And of course that includes a visit to Voyageur.

Schwarzbier

We would love to see you in our taproom where you can enjoy a pint of our new Schwarzbier, Svart Is.

Sometimes called black lagers, Schwarzbiers are very dark brown to black in color with a pale head. They have a mild roasted malt character without the associated bitterness.
Svart Is means “black ice” in both Swedish and Norwegian. It’s the time of year when ice covering our lakes becomes black as it slowly melts away, This black lager is medium to light bodied, refreshing and highly drinkable.
The process of brewing this beer is unique. A method called “staining” is involved and this is how the beer gets its color without extracting the bitter tannins that would otherwise make this beer acrid or tasting of burnt toast. Passed on to us by the Brewmaster of the Kalt Loch Brauerei in Bavaria where it is used for a black lager brewed for the monks of the Engelberg Monastery.
